Scholarship PROGRAM Information

The Avatamsaka Buddhist Lotus Society located in Milpitas, California is the only Buddhist non-profit charitable organization in the city. It was established in 1985 by the venerable Cheng Yi, president of the board of Avatamsaka Buddhist Lotus Society. Venerable Cheng Yi has always been a great proponent of education. Under his guidance, the Avatamsaka Buddhist Lotus Society has initiated a scholarship award program for high school students from families around its area with the hope that this scholarship program will assist these youths in achieving a successful life and becoming pillars of society.

Eligibility

11th and 12th grade students in high school are eligible to apply. Those who are in need of financial aid, whose families are affiliated with Avatamsaka Buddhist Lotus Society and have contributed to its charities will be given first priority.

To be determined by academic achievements and other pertinent information of applicants.

Application Process

Step 1: Complete the Scholarship Application Form.

Step 2: Write an essay as listed below.

Step 3: Submit the application form, essay and all required documents by June 15, 2010

Submission received after June 15, 2010 will not be processed.

Essay

A typed, one page minimum, essay on the following topic:

A Memorable Event that Affected You

Essay submitted with this scholarship application may be duplicated, published and displayed by ABLS in its sole discretion.

Required Documents

Completed application form—failure to complete the entire application may preclude your application from being considered;

Last two years school official transcripts.

Clear copy of current student identification card from your school

Photo of applicant taken within last 6 months

Letter of recommendation from your teacher

Copy of parents’ Year 2009 Tax Return

Scholarship Award Ceremony:

Location: Avatamsaka Buddhist Lotus Society, 20 S. Main Street, Milpitas

Time: August 2010 – exact date will be announced.

Scholarship recipients must appear in person in order to receive the award,

There will be no make up award. Recipient who fails to attend the award ceremony automatically gives up the scholarship.
